Solway Lass : 3 Day 3 Night
- library_addFAQs / Extras
Solway Lass is one of the most spectacular sailing vessels in the Whitsundays with her classic wooden decks, shined brass and hull lines of yesteryear. Combining traditional style and comfort to suit the solo traveller, the adventurous, as well as families, or couples Solway Lass offers a unique experience for guests of all ages - visiting all of the hotspots, with so much to see and experience around the islands, Solway Lass offers a 3 day and 3 night cruise or if you want to stay a little longer and really immerse yourself into the experience, take the 6 day 6 night Solway Lass cruise of the Whitsundays!
The Captain and crew will provide interpretive information on the Whitsunday Islands and a history talk about Solway Lass. Solway Lass has an amazing history being built in Holland in 1902, 1st registered in Hamburg, serving for Britain as a 'Q' Ship in WWI and a supply ship for Germany in WWII. Named Solway Lass after the Solway Firth in Scotland where she carried cargo to Liverpool and Dublin. Solway Lass was Sydney's Tall Ship from 1985 to 1999, participating in the 1st fleet re-enactment in 1988. Today beautifully restored and maintained and cruising the Whitsundays. The guest accommodation has been tastefully designed to feel 'old world' and consists of 4 or 6 Share, Twin or Double Cabins, all with Air Conditioning. Two cabins offer private bathroom facilities. We are an Eco Certified operator.
Please note : At check with the Explore Whitsundays office, you will be provided a soft bag for you to pack your belongings into, which is the only bag that can be taken on board as it has no zippers that can damage the vessel. At check in we also will provide options for luggage storage.
Please note, this itinerary is an example of the 3 day 3 night cruise and subject to change based on winds, tides and the Captains professional judgement for guest comfort. A 6 day 6 night (back to back) cruise option is available for guests who wish to extend the experience aboard Solway Lass.
Day 1 (Supper) - Check in at our office, Shop 1, 4 The Esplanade Airlie Beach by 4.30pm. After check-in, guests are welcome to leave their luggage in our office, prior to the shuttle transfer to the Marina. Guests may then explore Airlie Beach, have a meal, enjoy a walk along the beach. Courtesy pickups from Airlie Beach at 6.40pm for transfer to the marina. Depart the marina at 7.30pm and sail to overnight anchorage. Light supper is served around 9.30pm.
Day 2 (B,L,D) - After Breakfast, make way to Tongue Bay for a guided bush walk to the Hill Inlet Lookout. A spectacular lookout over looking Whitehaven Beach. Back on board Solway Lass enjoy lunch before heading around to Whitehaven Beach. Enjoy an hour on the beach before setting sail and heading north along the eastern side of Hook Island. Overnight anchor in one of the many bays on Hook Island.
Day 3 (B,L,D) - After Breakfast enjoy snorkelling and/or an optional Scuba Dive on the fringing coral reefs which extend right from the edge of the islands. These reefs are teeming with marine life and the experience is memorable for the snorkelling novice through to seasoned snorkellers. Enjoy lunch, before sailing off to another anchorage for a second snorkel, swim or simply relax at the beach. This evening will be spent anchored in Blue Pearl Bay of Hayman Island or in the Langford Reef Area. Both locations offer spectacular sunset photo opportunities as the Solway Lass is silhouetted against the sunset over the water.
Day 4 (B,L) - After Breakfast enjoy snorkelling, swimming or relaxing on the beach before lunch. At around 1:00pm set sail and sail across the Whitsunday Passage arriving back to the marina around 4.00pm with the courtesy shuttle transfer arriving back to Airlie Beach around 4.30pm. 3d3n tour ends, although many of the guests will meet up tonight for a meal at a local restaurant.

Guests travelling on Solway Lass should check-in at Explore Whitsundays, 4 Airlie Esplanade Airlie Beach 4802. The office hours are 7:30am to 7pm. Check-in should be done early in the day of travel or by latest 4:30pm. At check-in you will be provided with a boarding pass and the courtesy bus pickup will be arranged. Guests are also supplied with a soft bag to pack their belongings in to take on the cruise.
What to Pack
Please pack in the soft small bag provided during check-in. We suggest: swimmers, beach towel, sunscreen, lip balm, sunglasses, hat, jacket or sweater, sandals/joggers/thongs for island walk, toiletries, and any prescribed medicines. There are no shops around the islands, so please pick up important items before arriving at the marina. Don't forget to pack your treats, such as chocolates or crisps.
Diving is available when we meet up with our rendezvous dive boat Tornado. Whether you are a certified diver or a first time diver, we offer all guests the opportunity to discover the underwater world. With multiple dive locations available, we have the ability to move to the best diving spot on the day. You can pre book a dive at the Explore Whitsundays office in Airlie Beach, or organize with the crew on tour. To guarantee availability we advise pre booking your dive before departure.
Solway Lass has a fully licenced bar, with a wide variety of alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks available to you. The prices of alcohol are reasonable. Drinking water is included throughout your tour, however soft drinks are available for purchase on board. The crew will keep a tab and you can pay at the end of your tour.
Solway Lass has power points in the bar area and also in the bathrooms, so you can charge phones and tablets etc.
Don't worry, we supply swimming noodles and additional floatation as required. We will do a risk assessment on every guest before entering the water. While in the water the small tender will be relatively close by. We also have staff on look-out duty. In the Whitsundays, the reefs we visit are off the beaches, so it is pretty easy to make way to the beach. If you are really concerned about entering the water, we also have the Glass Bottom Boat on Solway Lass which is wonderful for coral viewing.
Large bags cannot be taken on-board. Storage services are available in Airlie Beach for a daily fee, generally around $5 per trip.
Guests can park vehicles at Abell Point Marina for the duration of the tour. Parking fees are $8.00 per day, and this can be paid using a credit card or coins.

Just wanted to let you know that we had the greatest time on Tall Ship sailing on Solway Lass. The crew were fantastic, (never a dull moment!) the food was delicious and apart from the 30 knot winds the overall trip was amazing. (mind you the 30 knott winds added to the excitement!!) I have never been on a tall ship before and sailing around the Whitsundays on Solway Lass was an absolute adventure! We're hoping to come back to Airlie Beach one day soon and go on maybe the Siska or the British Defender. We really wanted to say a big thanks to Greg, Mikey, Miles, Bec, Damo and Adriana for making it the best trip. Thanks again, Alison and Robert

It has been a year since our sail on the Solway Lass. We kindof relived our trip to Austrailia this year just for fun! We sailed the Lass June 7 - 10, 2003 and had the time of our lives. We had Crusty, Dave and Glenn taking care of business for our trip and they were fabulous. We really miss the fun we had and hope all are well. Hope to try it again some day.

Cook and Barman respectively in early 2001. The Solway Lass treated us well and we had an amazing experience living as 'Pirates' aboard the Lass. Trust all the crew are well and now she has been refurbished the Solway Lass is as amazing as ever.

Solway Lass - Hey! I was on the Solway Lass from Dec. 14 to Dec. 17 2004. It was a great tall ship with a fun/friendly crew. I loved snorkelling at Bluepearl Bay (Hayman Island) and sitting outside while we sailed peacefully in the Whitsundays. Simply one of the best parts of my 4 month trip accross Australia! Thanks!
Lauren , USA
Tall Ship Solway Laas - I was on 28 Feb to 3 March, I can't say enough great things about my experience. The crew was amazing, I came on expecting the worst (the first company I was with canceled my trip the day of the trip) and they made it a perfect vacation. I can't say enough nice things about the crew, food, drinks and Whitsundays. Cheers!

Solway Lass - Hey, we took a cruise on the Solway Lass on 11-13th December 2005, the battery on our camera died and a fellow passenger Andreas was going to set up a website with everyone's digital camera pictures on, unfortunatly, we don't have an e-mail address so If anyone on the boat then has been in contact and has the website address for the pictures we would be very grateful if you could let us know! It was a great trip and we would love some pictures of the Whitsundays to remember it.

Solway Lass Reviews - Sailing the Whitsundays - Thank you to all for one memorable experience of a life time that I will never forget. The crew were superb from the start to finish from being pleasent attentive and informative. Also compliments to the chef for the fantastic cooking. I will be recommending the whole experience to anyone back home that is keen to cover the Whitsundays away from the commercial side of the hotel package. I have many pictures to look back on and I am already receiving interest from friends back home asking many questions. Finally I will never forget my brief encounter with Elvis the fish which was priceless :o)Thank you again Sarah OReilly(London UK)
